Be A Refresher: Pouring Life Into Others

I heard a quote one time that stated, “In life there are three kinds of people: refreshers, neutrals, and drainers.  Thank God for the refreshers in your life.  Be a refresher!”

In a world that often feels heavy, rushed, and emotionally draining, there is something deeply powerful about being the kind of woman who refreshes others. Scripture speaks clearly about this calling: “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” — Proverbs 11:25

To be a “refresher” is to bring life, encouragement, and peace in the spaces you walk into. It’s not about having all the right words or fixing someone’s problems—it’s about being a vessel God can use to lift weary hearts.

Think about how Jesus interacted with people. He noticed the overlooked, paused for the hurting, and spoke life into the discouraged. As women striving to follow Him, we are called to do the same in our homes, friendships, workplaces, and communities.

Sometimes being a refresher looks like offering a kind word at just the right moment. “Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” — Proverbs 16:24
Your words carry weight. A simple “I’m proud of you,” or “I’m praying for you,” can shift someone’s entire day.

Other times, it looks like simply showing up. In a culture full of surface-level interactions, presence is powerful. Job’s friends actually got it right at first—they sat with him in silence during his suffering.  “Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights.  No one said a word to Job, for they saw that his suffering was too great for words.” Job 2:13 There is something deeply comforting about not being alone.

Being a refresher also requires awareness. You can’t pour into others if you’re constantly running on empty. “But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer.” Luke 5:16 If He needed time to be refilled, so do we. When you allow God to restore your own heart, you’ll have something genuine to give others.

It’s important to remember that refreshing others isn’t about striving—it’s about abiding. When you stay connected to Christ, His Spirit naturally produces love, kindness, and gentleness within you. Those qualities overflow into the lives around you.

You may never fully know the impact you’re making. The text you send, the prayer you whisper over a friend, the patience you show your child—these small acts matter. God uses them in ways you can’t always see.

And here’s the beautiful promise: when you live this way, you won’t end up depleted—you’ll be refreshed too. God honors a heart that pours out for others.

So today, ask yourself: Who in my life needs refreshing?
Then take a step—send the message, say the prayer, offer the encouragement.

You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to be willing.

Because a woman who refreshes others becomes a reflection of the One who refreshes us all.
